The Creative Heart of the Community
The Kōwhai Collective started in 2011 as Pay It Forward - a creative social enterprise in the suburb of Mairehau. Since then it has morphed into The Kōwhai Collective and has changed location twice. We now inhabit an awesome little shop in The Salt District close to Little High at 181 High Street, entry from Tuam Street - see the map below.
The collective currently includes artists, jewellery makers, textile artists, glass and ceramic work, toy makers, and woodwork.
If you live in the greater Christchurch area and would like to express an interest in joining the team, please go to the join us page for more info.
Pay it Forward
Pay It Forward was a creative social enterprise run by a collective of artists, crafters and designers living in and around Christchurch, New Zealand. This was an initiative set up by Neighbourhood Trust in the Christchurch suburb of Mairehau. Pay it Forward had a great run from 2011 to October 2019, at which point Neighbourhood Trust released Pay it Forward so the former could support other community organisations.
Many of the designers at Pay it Forward knew they wanted to continue showcasing their designs and products, but also share their skills and engage more with the community. We reformed as The Kōwhai Collective, and with amazing support from the Enliven Places Project Fund and Life in Vacant Spaces, We have enjoyed our time as a “pop-up” shop in the Guthrey Centre, in central Christchurch.
