Backyard Ceramics is a family-run small-batch pottery studio based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. We focus on producing high-quality, one-of-a-kind ceramics that bring small moments of joy to your everyday routine. Each piece is individually handcrafted with intention and care through a combination of wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, with an emphasis on aesthetic, functional products that feel great in the hand and are made to last.

Products that we make include mugs, tumblers, keep cups, trinket dishes, milk jugs, spoon rests, garlic graters, bowls, plates, and more.

Every piece that comes out of our kiln is carefully finished to the highest standard: any exposed clay is carefully buffed and polished so that it is smooth to the touch, and it is then finished with a food-safe ceramic sealant to ensure durability and longevity. We also test all our work for thermal shock, ensuring it can withstand sudden changes in temperature and hold up to everyday use.

Sustainability is also central to our business: we reclaim and reuse all unfired clay to limit waste, and source all clays and glazes from our local pottery store. In addition, we package all orders using only sustainable, recyclable materials to minimise environmental impact.

Our small-batch approach allows us to make slowly and thoughtfully, reducing excess and creating timeless pieces that are intended to be cherished rather than replaced.
